PENNYBRIX
'Games and Toys', November 1964

This is the second of two advertising puffs from the last quarter of 1964, neither of which mentions BAYKO, and that is the reason for their inclusion on the site. This entry, from page 54 'Games and Toys', in November, 1964 is for the [then] new product of PENNYBRIX, by Lines Brothers, who are best known as the manufacturers of Tri-ang.
My reason for the inclusion of these puffs is that they are both advocating plastic construction toys, from the Lines Brothers stable, effectively at the expense of BAYKO, then 'one of their own'. However, BAYKO was clearly out of favour as it was half a year since any mention in any press item I've been able to find. I believe this lack of marketing support is a strong indicator supporting the theory that MECCANO and/or Lines Brothers had taken the 'Do Not Resuscitate' decision for BAYKO, simply making as much money from it as possible before that fateful day.
November, 1960 article on PENNYBRIX, the new offering from Lines Brothers
The text itself reads as follows : -
"Toy for a Penny"
"One can hardly believe that in this day and age a toy can be purchased for a penny, but it is indeed a fact, for Lines Bros Ltd have introduced Pennybrix. This is a system of interlocking building bricks from which a wide variety of buildings can be built: houses, garages, blocks of flats, etc., all easily constructed and colourfully realistic. A child can go into a toyshop and buy one brick for a penny and in a short time will have enough bricks to construct a model."
"An extra large size of Pennybrix was decided for easier and quicker building. At the moment there are two sets, one at 12s 6d and the other at 19s 11d. There are also extra packs at 2s 6d. Also included are window and door units which actually open and close. Wherever Pennybrix are sold there will be seen an entertaining little character termed 'Periwinkle'. A story book about him and his adventures will be available free from the stores and toyshops."
PENNYBRIX was clearly aimed at the same market occupied by BAYKO, and the relatively newly arrived, LEGO. There is also a clear overlap with the newly launched CLIKI, from MECCANO, a fellow member of the Lines Brothers group of companies.

BAYKO had been a regular advertiser in 'Games and Toys'...
