Lines Brothers Takeover Announcement
'Games and Toys', March 1964

This is the first mention of BAYKO's fate, as page 26 of the March, 1964 edition of 'Games and Toys', the leading publication of the day for the British toy trade, announced the takeover, of MECCANO, by Lines Brothers, who are best known as the manufacturers of Tri-ang.

I'm afraid I don't know the exact date of the takeover, but I can narrow it down. It must be very early in January, 1964, given the usual publishers deadlines, and it can't be a coincidence that BAYKO's original manufacturer, the Plimpton Engineering Company, was formally wound up as of January 1st, 1964.
The text itself reads as follows : -
"LINES BROS Ltd - MECCANO"
"Statement from Mr. W. Moray Lines."
"Friends in the trade will know by now that Meccano Ltd have joined the Lines Bros Group."
"The two companies will, of course, co-operate where it can benefit all concerned, but we wish to make it clear that Meccano Ltd will continue as an entirely separate company, designing, producing and marketing its own products all over the world. This will ensure the vigorous continuance, and we hope advance, of all the famous brands Meccano, Dinky Toys, Hornby Trains, Bayko and new ranges to follow, in friendly competition with their Tri-ang counterparts."
"We would like to take the opportunity of thanking all our customers for their past splendid support, and look forward to great things in the future."
The "friendly competition" with the rest of the group lead to some strange issues, for example as both sides pushed new plastic construction toys - CLIKKI, CLIKKI PLUS and PENNYBRIX in direct competition...
