ROBIN THROP - ELITE BAYKO ITEMS AUCTION

The late ROBIN THROP

This auction represents stage three of the disposal of the late Robin Throp's substantial BAYKO collection on behalf of his family.  In addition to this site, a catalogue has been sent to all BAYKO Collectors Club members. The finish time for this auction is : -
MIDNIGHT [24:00 B.S.T.], FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th, 2016.

The first two stages took the form of auctions at BAYKO Collectors Club meetings at Lane End Village hall in September, 2015 and May 2016.

The fourth and final part of Robin’s BAYKO collection will form the core of the club’s next auction, at the same venue, opening at : -
10:00 a.m. on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3rd, 2017
These have all been structured in such a manner as to direct Robin’s “Treasures” to those who offer them “a good home”.

Let me wish you good luck with your bidding in this auction – there are NO BIDDING PREMIUMS to consider, though a percentage of the hammer price does go to support the BAYKO Collectors Club funds, and to the auctioneer – Pete Bradley.
SO, BID HIGH WITH CONFIDENCE!!!
n.b.  Each item has a reasonable reserve price, to protect Robin’s family, and will be redirected to eBay if it remains unsold.
GOOD LUCK!!!
I strongly recommend that you read the AUCTION RULES before you continue with the bidding...

DESCRIPTION

I thought I'd start with a singular item, a BAYKO Collectors Box.  Little is known of these, and I've never seen them mentioned in any official BAYKO literature.  Simply they were probably designed, in the 1950s, as a storage box for young collectors to keep their growing collections under control.

Logic suggests that they may have doubled, if not actually started life as, BAYKO Salesmen's sample boxes, but letters from the company certainly confirm that they were dispatched as BAYKO Collection Boxes.

Whatever their true origin, they are certainly quite rare.  My evidence is simple observation, despite the fact that they are 20 years younger than, say, a pre-war set 6, far fewer of them that have survived to the present day. I believe that there is some internal partitioning missing, underneath where the small tray fits [upper centre, above].

Please don't forget that, as the images [above] clearly show, a substantial BAYKO collection is already included in the box!!!

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £300 to £500.

DESCRIPTION

This is a good example of a MECCANO Era Dealers Cabinet. These cabinets were designed to sit on the toy shop counter, with the drawers facing the shop keeper, and the display card on the back showing the available range of BAYKO Spare Parts to the eager young collector.

This cabinet is in excellent condition, and, as the photos show, there are plenty of spare parts included in the auction.

Normally these cabinets had a wooden topping piece, with a golden BAYKO label, above the display card at the back, but Robin’s has vanished!  If it emerges before the end of the year, the winning bidder will be given first refusal at a price of £50.

As well as being collectable in their own right, this cabinet could be useful for storing your collection!

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £250 to £400.

DESCRIPTION

This is a good example of a Plimpton Era Wooden Dealers Cabinet. These cabinets were designed to sit on the toy shop counter, with the drawers facing the shop keeper, and the display card on the back showing the available range of BAYKO Spare Parts to the eager young collector. As the photos show, there are no spare parts included in the auction.

These Cabinets were originally supplied "Free on Loan" to retailers, who ordered a full cabinet of spare parts, for their shop.  Given that the original cardboard cabinets had been available for a couple of years before the wooden cabinets were made available, many shopkeepers didn't take up the offer, meaning that these Plimpton era Wooden Cabinets are much rarer as well as being much older than their MECCANO counterpart.

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £400 to £600.

DESCRIPTION

These Cabinets had two purposes, both in the spare parts arena. Firstly this is how a "Full Cabinet" would have been shipped to the toy shop. Secondly, they were also used, like the wooden ones described earlier, on the toy shop counter.

Given that they were made entirely from cardboard, this example has survived the intervening sixty odd years very well in deed. The four drawers simply sat inside the 'shell' of the cabinet and would be lifted out as required to satisfy the young BAYKO collectors order.

All the contents shown in the photos, which seem to never have been used, are included, as shown, in the auction.

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £150 to £250.

DESCRIPTION

This is another type of BAYKO Cardboard Dealers Cabinet from the Plimpton era, however, this time it is designed as a small, four-drawer, 'chest of drawers'. It too has probably recently celebrated its sixtieth birthday, and, as you can see, is still fit and healthy!!!

As usual, all the spare parts contents shown in the photos are included in the auction.

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 8 – A PAIR OF PINNACLE ROOFS with PINNACLE PLATFORMS is another Item from the 20s series special sets, manufactured between 1938 and 1940.

Given the fragile nature of the Pinnacle Roof ‘TIPS’, I thought I should record the fact that these are in good condition, and I have added images which attempt to show that.

These are highly sought after BAYKO parts.

Item 9B - pack of white windows

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 9A and ITEM 9B – TWO PACKS of WHITE WINDOWS are very sought after indeed.  These ‘Cruciform’ style windows are later than the more familiar ‘Georgian’ style white windows, but are substantially less common, particularly the Large Windows and the Curved Windows. As such, they are significantly more valuable.

In line with the rules of the auction, and the intent to spread "Robin's Treasures" to as many good homes as possible, while you can bid on either, individually, or both lots, as you wish, the winning bidder will only be able to win one of them. The second pack of Windows will go to the next highest bidder.

ITEM 11A
ITEM 11B
ITEM 11A - a pair of bright green mottled roofs
ITEM 11B - a pair of bright green mottled roofs

DESCRIPTION

These BRIGHT GREEN MOTTLED ROOFS  hale from both the Ornamental Additions Set C [the largest] and the universally sought after Set 6. These, like all the bright green roofs, date, approximately, between 1937 and 1940.

In line with the rules of the auction, and the intent to spread "Robin's Treasures" to as many good homes as possible, while you can bid on either, individually, or both lots, as you wish, the winning bidder will only be able to win one of them. The second pair of Roofs will go to the next highest bidder.

The Items actually comprise ONE LARGE ROOF and ONE SMALL ROOF, in matching colours. n.b. The Small Roof was later renamed the Medium Roof.

The bright colour of these Roofs has made them a favourite with BAYKO  collectors world-wide, for many years.

DESCRIPTION

These TWO PAIRS of DARK GREEN MOTTLED ROOFS  hale from both the Ornamental Additions Set C [the largest] and the universally sought after 'Oak' Set 6. This pair, like all the dark green roofs, date, approximately, between 1935 and 1937.

The Items actually comprise ONE LARGE ROOF and ONE SMALL ROOF, in matching colours. n.b. The small roof was later renamed the Medium Roof.

It's a personal choice, but I actually prefer the darker shade - and, of course, they are older than the bright ones!

ITEM 13 - SMALL ROOF DAMAGE
ITEM 13 - a pair of oak-ish mottled roofs

ITEM 13 - a pair of Oak-ish mottled small roof - showing interior damage

DESCRIPTION

These ‘OAK’-ISH MOTTLED ROOFS probably hale from both the Ornamental Additions Set C [the largest] and the universally sought after Set 6.  Normally anything approaching this colour is probably caused by U.V. light exposure, leaving the interior its original green-ish colour.  To my imperfect eyesight, this is not the case here. This colour shade is well outside the normal ‘official’ range, and, as such, is likely to be a popular offering.

The Item actually comprises ONE LARGE ROOF and ONE SMALL ROOF, in matching colours. n.b. The Small Roof was later renamed the Medium Roof.

The right hand photo [right, above] shows the interior damage to the Small Roof, which remains totally invisible when built with.

DESCRIPTION

These LARGE MOTTLED GREEN BASES were unique to the 20s series sets, the ones that also contained the orange parts, and, as such are highly collectable. As a general rule, the earlier the set, the darker the green.

Here we have a comparatively bright green example, which dates it towards 1940.

Here you are bidding on a single LARGE MOTTLED GREEN BASE which is in very good to excellent condition, but does show minor signs of its almost eighty years.

Here we have, as separate lots, two pairs of these bases, which are accurately colour matched.

In line with the rules of the auction, and the intent to spread Robin's "Treasures" to as many good homes as possible, while you can bid on either pair, individually, or both pairs, as you wish, the winning bidder will only be able to win one of them. Item 16 - special set 20 - exterior

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 16 - BAYKO SET 20 is the smallest of the highly collectable 20s series of sets. These were introduced in 1938, and represented the first wave in a period of total change for BAYKO, leading to the product range we are all familiar with.

These sets introduced all the much-prized orange parts and the bay window components. They also introduced the large green mottled bases.

The box is in really good condition, and includes much of the internal cardboard, as can be seen from the photos.

Small it may be, but this is a very desirable BAYKO set.

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 17 - BAYKO SPECIAL SET 21 is the second in the highly collectable 20s series of four sets. These were introduced in 1938, and represented the first wave in a period of total change for BAYKO, leading to the product range we are all familiar with.

These sets introduced all the much-prized orange parts and the bay window components. They also introduced the large green mottled bases.

The set is almost complete, and is definitely a 'project' to show it off to its best effect. There is damage to the box sides. However, this is a great opportunity to add value, with all the necessary information available to complete the set to exhibition standard.

Hence the comparatively low estimate.

DESCRIPTION

This is the largest of the three Ornamental Additions Sets. They were introduced in 1935, and like many sets of the period, the darker the individual parts, the earlier the set. ITEM 18 - ORNAMENTAL ADDITIONS SET C is certainly one of the earlier examples.

These sets were intended to augment the standard BAYKO sets of the period, and included some highly collectable colour variants of otherwise standard parts. They also include a number of 'Oak' parts.

This set is in excellent condition, and is certainly exhibition standard, which, of course, makes it highly desirable.

DESCRIPTION

The 'New Series' sets were introduce in mid 1939, and historians of the second world war will realise why not many of the larger sets from this period have survived.

ITEM 19 - PRE-WAR 'NEW SERIES' SET 5 is a fine example of the second largest set from the period, and is in very good condition. It would require very little work to get it up to exhibition standard - it even has the original cards for the curved parts, etc., few of which have survived the intervening seventy odd years.

This is a highly desirable pre-war BAYKO set.

DESCRIPTION

The "DE-LUXE" NUMBER 6 SET was the prestige set of its, and any other, time.

There is a significant qualitative difference between these two BAYKO set 6s, nevertheless, in line with the rules of the auction, and the intent to spread Robin's "Treasures" to as many good homes as possible, while you can bid on either set, individually, or both, as you wish, the winning bidder will only be able to win one. The second BAYKO set 6 will go to the next highest bidder. To avoid disappointment, I strongly advise bidding separately on these items.

ITEM 20A is in excellent condition, seems to be complete, and is highly desirable item for any BAYKO collector.

ITEM 20B is in fair condition, and is about 75% complete, it is nonetheless a desirable item for any BAYKO collector, and, while it is self-evidently a project, it is a great opportunity to begin to acquire BAYKO’s 'Holy Grail'.

ESTIMATED VALUE

Item 21 - 'Oak' Hydro Model - rear and right

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 21 -'OAK' HYDRO MODEL which first emerged in the earliest BAYKO manual for the [then] new set 6.

This model is regarded by many as the best of the set 6 models, and has certainly regularly proved to be a winner at exhibitions over the years.  It is built throughout in ‘Oak’ bricks, etc., with white 8-pane, Georgian style windows. Apart from a few pieces of Crazy Paving, the only non standard parts are one post-war Floor and a conventional brown Roof.

The model is valuable in itself, but, of course, it will be highly prized for its rare components.

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £800 to £1,200.

Item 22 - 'Oak' Country Club Model - rear and right

DESCRIPTION

ITEM 22 -'OAK' COUNTRY CLUB MODEL perhaps shows, at its best, Robin's approach to the rarer parts he acquired in his collection - he built models with them - well that is what they're for!

The model is based on the Country Club model from the cover of the manuals, built primarily in 'Oak' with white, eight-pane, 'Georgian Style' windows. However, these are augmented with many rare parts, such as white, Curved Windows, Grey Canopies, 1-Brick Pillars, Large Mottled Green Bases, and several orange parts.  A high percentage of the components are pre-war.

The model is valuable in itself, but, of course, it will be highly prized for its rare components.

ESTIMATED VALUE

The AUCTION RANGE ESTIMATE is £1,500 to £2,500.
